News News The life and legacy of Les Leslie Jackson lived a truly remarkable life—one defined by courage, dedication, and generosity. His contributions, both during his lifetime and after his passing, are a lifeline for local children and their families. Born and raised in Sheffield, Les’ story is one of bravery, resilience, and a deep sense of duty. During World War II, he served as a rear-gunner in RAF, flying in Lancaster Bombers and playing a key role in the D-Day landings. After the war, Les returned to Sheffield, where he retrained as an electrician and met Mabel, his future wife. They married in 1959 and enjoyed over 60 years of a happy, fulfilling marriage. Throughout his life, Les demonstrated generosity and a deep care for those in need, until he passed away in January 2024, just shy of his 100th birthday—something he had always hoped to achieve. His legacy, however, continues to inspire and make a difference in the lives of others across the region. His generous spirit shone through in his final wish - to benefit ten charities, with a special place in his heart for Bluebell Wood. His gift of almost £25,000 will help ensure babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions receive specialist palliative care where and when needed. Les' niece, Christine Cronshaw, visited the hospice to deliver a cheque on behalf of her Uncle Les. She said: “My Uncle Les always cared deeply for others and his gift to Bluebell Wood is a testament to his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. It brings our family comfort to know that his legacy will continue to support such a wonderful cause, helping families when they need it most.” Since the hospice first opened its doors in 2008, gifts in Wills have played a key part in funding that care, in fact, one in five families we support are funded by the kindness and generosity of individuals like Les. With demand and costs for services rising each year, gifts in Wills to Bluebell Wood are vital and ensures we are always there for children and families that need us. Kelly Gerrard, our Individual Giving Manager, shared her gratitude: “We are so incredibly grateful to Les and his family for their support. Every legacy gift, whether big or small, plays a vital role in allowing us to be there for families now and in the future. “Les’ legacy will live on, not just in the memory of his courage and service, but in the ongoing support and care provided to those who need it most. His gift ensures that Bluebell Wood can continue to support families during the most challenging times of their lives. His story is one of service, love, and generosity—and we are honoured to be a part of that legacy.” Les, your memory and your legacy will forever be cherished. Thank you for everything.
