Meet our Superheroes At Bluebell Wood, we’re celebrating the incredible work our nurses do for babies, children, young people and their families - they truly are our superheroes! Our service is nurse-led, which means every moment of care is guided by their skill and compassion. They provide 24/7 end-of-life care at home and in the hospice, plan short breaks that give families precious time together, and even join special days out - from the seaside to the cinema – making sure every experience is safe and comfortable. But what makes our nurses extraordinary isn’t just their expertise - it’s the way they combine complex medical care with fun and smiles. They’re a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on, bringing comfort and reassurance when families need it most. It costs £6.7 million a year to run Bluebell Wood, and with only 17% funded by the government, we depend on amazing supporters, like you. Our specialist nursing team is funded by the generosity of our local community - every ticket you buy helps them bring care and smiles to families who need it most. With your support, our nurses can continue to be there. We recently spent some time chatting with a few of our wonderful nurses about what working at Bluebell Wood means to them. In this short interview video, Kathy and Amy, two of our brilliant Nurse Practitioners, talk about how they care for and support the babies, children and young people who come to us. Watch it on YouTube Laura, one of our dedicated Bluebell Wood Nurses with experience in both Mental Health and Paediatric Nursing, joined the team in April 2024. She’s also shared her reflections and experiences in the interview below. “Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice holds a special place in my heart, both personally and professionally, as it embodies compassion, dignity and truly child and family-centred care during the most vulnerable times in life. The hospice’s commitment to creating a warm, comforting environment where children are supported as individuals, not just patients, strongly aligns with my own values as a nurse. Bluebell Wood enables me to apply my clinical skills in practice, contributing to a service that prioritises dignity, comfort, and personalised care for children and their families. "Honouring how young people want to live and die means making space for the small, deeply personal things that bring them comfort and joy. This may include surrounding them with their favourite music, toys, blankets or stories, celebrating special moments, or creating an environment that feels familiar and safe rather than clinical. By listening closely to the child and their family, we help tailor care to reflect the child’s personality, preferences and wishes, allowing them to spend their final days in a way that feels meaningful to them. These personal touches affirm their individuality and dignity, ensuring that their final moments are filled with love, comfort, and a sense of peace rooted in who they truly are. The work I do at Bluebell Wood is profoundly rewarding, as it centres on providing compassionate, high-quality care that honours both the child/young person and their families during the most vulnerable moments of life. Laura continues, "Through a commitment to clinical excellence and deep empathy, we focus not only on managing pain and symptoms but also on supporting emotional, psychological and spiritual needs. This holistic, patient-centred approach ensures that each child/young people are treated with dignity, comfort, and respect, allowing them to experience peace at the end of life. By building trusting relationships with families and advocating for the child/young person’s wishes and best interests, as nurses, we play a vital role in creating a calm, supportive environment where children can die with dignity and families/children/young people can feel supported, heard, and cared for.” Enter the Superhero Superdraw today!
