Local Man Who Has Overcome Cancer Takes on London Marathon Local Man Who Has Overcome Cancer Takes on London Marathon to Support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. A courageous cancer survivor from Rawmarsh, Rotherham, is set to run the London Marathon this year to raise vital funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice after being inspired by his second chance at life and the remarkable work the hospice does for families in need. Diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in February 2023, Thomas Doherty had an operation in April at Weston Park Hospital, followed by months of intensive treatment. Now in remission and attending regular check-ups, Thomas embraces life with a renewed determination. "Running the London Marathon has always been a dream of mine," Thomas shared. "After everything my family and I have been through, I see this as an opportunity to give something back. I’ve been blessed with a second chance, and I want to use it to help others." Despite the physical and emotional toll of his diagnosis, Thomas hasn’t let it stop his passion for fitness. Training for the marathon has been a transformative experience. Thomas said, "Getting back into fitness after my treatment was like coming back to life," he said. It’s given me focus, energy, and a sense of purpose." When he’s not training for the marathon, Thomas loves to run at his favourite spot, Greasbrough Dam at Wentworth. "It's a beautiful route, and it’s where I feel at my best," he explained. During a recent visit to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Thomas was deeply moved by the supportive and uplifting environment. "I was nervous to come, but I was amazed by how welcoming and peaceful it is, he said. "The Dragonfly Garden was beautiful, and the way the hospice helps families live as normally as possible is incredible.” When Thomas learned he’d secured a coveted spot in the London Marathon, emotions ran high. "I cried when I found out, he said "It’s such a huge opportunity to make a difference, and I’m so proud to be running for Bluebell Wood." To support his fundraising efforts, Thomas relies on the generosity of family, friends, and the public. From setting up a JustGiving page to organising creative fundraising activities, he’s taking every opportunity to help the hospice continue its vital work. Thomas enjoys indulging his favourite food Mexican cuisine, and travelling to his favourite holiday destination, Thailand. Despite his tough exterior, he admits to a surprising fear of pigeons and has a remarkable talent for eating a bag of Drumstick Squashies in just 30 seconds! By running the London Marathon, he hopes to raise awareness and funds for Bluebell Wood, ensuring more families can access the care and support they need during the most challenging times of their lives.
