Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice recently hosted a transition support event at St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield, bringing together families and professionals to help guide young people moving from children’s to adult services.

The session is part of a wider programme of events delivered throughout the year at key hospices and partner sites across the region, offering families accessible, local support at important stages in their journey.

Among those attending were Kevin and his wife Penny, who shared how valuable the day had been for their family. Their son Kiran has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has recently turned 18, marking the start of his transition into adult services. Their younger son Kai also joined them.

Kevin said:

“My name is Kevin. I’m here with my wife Penny and we have a son, Kiran, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We also have another son, Kai, who is a little younger.”

“Kiran has just turned 18, so he’s now an adult. This event today has been really helpful in giving us advice about transitioning to adult care and some of the things we need to think about going forward.”

The event included specialist legal guidance from Banner Jones Solicitors, who supported families with advice around financial planning and future arrangements.

Kevin explained:

“We were able to talk to Banner Jones Solicitors who gave us quite detailed advice around financial aspects, which can be difficult topics to discuss. They were extremely sensitive and understanding, and very generous with their time.”

“It’s been particularly useful for us.”

He also spoke about the value of meeting other families and reconnecting with Bluebell Wood staff.

“It was lovely to see some of the Bluebell Wood team again. It’s always a pleasure, and the setting is great and very convenient for us in Sheffield.”

“Meeting other parents in similar situations was really helpful too. It’s nice to share support and offer each other reassurance.”

Bluebell Wood extended a huge thank you to Banner Jones Solicitors for their expert, compassionate support, which played a key role in helping families navigate complex but important conversations.

The hospice continues to deliver a series of transition-focused events across the region, ensuring families feel supported, informed and connected at every stage of their journey.
