I’ve not worked in a children’s hospice before – what’s it like?

There are a lot of common misconceptions about what it’s like to work at a children’s hospice. Some people may think that it’s a sad place to work, but by reading our Staff Stories and watching our Virtual Tour, we hope you’ll realise that that isn’t the case. Bluebell Wood really is a fantastic place to work.

As soon as people walk through the door, they tell us the hospice is nothing like how they imagined it to be. Bluebell Wood is colourful, and full of love and laughter – you can often hear music and giggles echoing down the corridors! There’s always something fun happening – whether it’s an activity day, music therapy, or a parent and carer wellbeing group. The hospice genuinely feels like a home from home for families.

It’s important for us to say that sad things do happen at the hospice; we do offer vital end-of-life care and bereavement support for families who need it. But along their journey with us, we’re there to help families create happy memories that they can treasure, and that’s what makes working at a children’s hospice so rewarding. Our entire team – including care, fundraising, administrative and support staff – all play a part, and we’re all incredibly privileged to do what we do.

What is the interview process like?

Your interview will usually take place at our hospice in North Anston, however due to the current COVID-19 pandemic we are currently hosting many of our interviews on Microsoft Teams. You’ll meet at least three people on the day and have the chance to ask your own questions of the panel too. The interviews are competency-based, and you may also need to complete a test or presentation on the day, depending on the role you have applied for.

If you are shortlisted to interview then, firstly, congratulations! We only invite the very best candidates to interview with us. Please make sure you check you can attend the interview date before you apply, as it is very unlikely that we will be able to offer you an alternative interview date.

We’ll let you know what to expect when we invite you, including all the information you need to log-in to our virtual interview sessions on Microsoft Teams.

During normal circumstances, you would usually be offered a tour of the hospice and our office space, however while our COVID restrictions remain in place this unfortunately won’t be possible. Instead, you can watch our virtual tour here.

When we’ve completed the interview process we’ll be in touch to let you know the outcome as soon as possible.
